Restore the gloss your paint had when it was new

What paint correction actually is

Paint correction is the process of using a machine polisher, the right pads, and carefully matched compounds and polishes to remove the defects sitting in your vehicle’s clear coat: swirl marks, fine scratches, buffer trails, water spots, and dull oxidation. Instead of hiding flaws behind a filler glaze that washes away in a few weeks, correction levels the surface so light reflects cleanly again. The result is the deep, mirror-like gloss and clarity the paint had when it left the factory.

There’s an important difference between correcting paint and masking it. A lot of off-the-shelf products and quick “detail” jobs use glazes and fillers that temporarily fill swirls so the car looks great in the driveway, until the first wash or rain. Real correction changes the paint itself, so the improvement lasts.

This is a skilled, machine-and-eye job

Paint correction works by removing a microscopically thin layer of clear coat, just enough to bring the defects level with the surface. That clear coat is finite, and done carelessly a polisher can burn through it, leaving permanent damage that only repainting can fix. This is not a one-size-fits-all process: every panel has to be read, the right pad and compound chosen for that paint’s hardness, and the cut measured and checked as the work progresses.

It’s exactly why training matters. OG Detailing is owned and run by lead detailer Derek Petrucci, an IDA-Certified Detailer with 200+ hours of hands-on training and ongoing continuing education. Derek reads the paint, tests before he commits, and works conservatively so your finish is improved, never compromised.

One-step vs. two-step: a one-step (enhancement) polish uses a single pad-and-product combination to remove the majority of light swirls and restore a strong gloss in less time, great value for daily drivers. A two-step correction adds a heavier cutting stage to tackle deeper scratches, then refines with a finishing polish to remove any haze the cut leaves behind. We’ll recommend the right level for your paint and your goals after an honest inspection.

The benefits

  • Removes swirl marks, fine scratches, buffer trails, and marring (not just hides them)
  • Clears up water spots and oxidation that leave paint looking dull and chalky
  • Restores deep, true gloss, color depth, and reflection, not a temporary glaze
  • Creates a flawless surface that’s the ideal foundation for a ceramic coating
  • Protects resale value and helps a vehicle present its best before sale or trade-in

Our process

We work methodically so the result is consistent and safe for your paint:

  • Assess & inspect: we evaluate the paint under proper lighting to identify the defects and judge how much correction it needs (and can safely take).
  • Wash & decontaminate: a thorough wash plus chemical and clay decontamination removes embedded grime so we polish clean paint, not grit.
  • Test spot: we dial in the right pad/compound combination on a small area first to confirm results before correcting the whole vehicle.
  • Correct: machine polishing to cut down and remove the defects, panel by panel.
  • Refine: a finishing polish removes any haze and brings the finish to its highest clarity and gloss.
  • Protect & seal: we lock in the work with a sealant or wax, or pair the correction with a ceramic coating for long-term protection.

Why correction matters around Huntley and the NW suburbs

Cars in Huntley, Sun City / Del Webb, and across the Northwest Suburbs and Northern Illinois take a beating. Long commutes on McHenry and Kane County roads, automatic car washes with harsh spinning brushes, and our brutal salt season all leave behind swirls, marring, and dull, tired paint. Paint correction brings that finish back, and because it leaves a clean, level surface, it’s the perfect first step before applying a ceramic coating. We serve Huntley along with Lake in the Hills, Algonquin, Crystal Lake, Elgin, McHenry, Woodstock, Cary, and the surrounding communities, with both mobile service and drop-off / pickup at the shop off Rt 47 by the Huntley Park District.

Who it’s for

  • Older daily drivers whose paint has gone dull, swirled, or oxidized over the years
  • Any vehicle with a swirl-heavy finish from automatic car washes or improper washing
  • Owners prepping a car for sale or trade-in who want it to show at its best
  • Enthusiasts who want a true show-quality gloss
  • Anyone planning a ceramic coating: correction first means the coating locks in flawless paint, not the flaws underneath

Pricing for paint correction depends on your vehicle’s size, paint condition, and whether it needs a one-step or two-step correction, so we quote it after a quick look. See our services for “starting at” details, or get in touch and we’ll talk through what your paint needs. The fastest way to get a straight answer is a phone call. Reach Derek at 224-650-0067.
